Holladay Properties, a South Bend, IN—based commercial real estate firm, has teamed up with Holy Cross College, Design Collaborative and Holladay Construction Group to solve a housing shortage on the Holy Cross campus near South Bend, IN.
While many colleges and universities have struggled in recent years, Holy Cross is experiencing dramatic growth in student enrollment and in physical presence within the Notre Dame community. Holladay will lead development of a new women’s residence hall and grassy, student-centered quad that will bring dramatic changes to the look of Holy Cross College’s campus.
“Change is good,” Holy Cross College President Brother John Paige said at the groundbreaking ceremony held on October 10. The center of the campus will evolve from concrete parking to a green space where students and faculty can gather. The new, centralized courtyard will be “a marvelous space to increase our collegiate atmosphere and support the relationships we build at Holy Cross,” said Brother Page.
Since construction of the new 17,792 square foot dormitory will require demolishing existing basketball and beach volleyball courts, the project also includes building new basketball, beach volleyball and regulation dodge ball courts adjacent to the existing Pfeil Recreation Center. Parking on the southeast side of the college will also be added to allow easy access to activities and events for students and visitors to the college.
“We are thrilled to be working with Holy Cross College to provide innovative campus solutions,” said Larry Mudd, Partner and VP-Development for Holladay Properties. “We are looking forward to being a part of the growth and new look coming to the campus.”
The new dormitory will house 66 female students, two resident assistants and one hall director and increase the overall housing capacity by about 30 percent. The two-story facility, which is expected to open in August 2015, features common area spaces including fireside recreational areas on both levels, multiple living rooms and a study. Design Collaborative, a Fort Wayne-based architectural firm that Holladay previously worked with on a dormitory for Grace College, is serving as the project architect and Holladay Construction Group is the General Contractor.
